For POP3 clients, investigating alternatives to traditional SSL/TSL secured connections finds a small but important area of interest for developers. This work is motivated by the need to test Java-based clients in environments without access to contemporary encryption techniques. Although the discontinuation of support for less secure apps by large providers presents difficulties, there are workarounds such as setting up private servers or looking for particular services that still permit these connections.
